Sabbath Day Potential Builder

On Sunday’s, I like to take a day from everything and consider what—and more importantly, who—is most important in my life. Here is a little more of a spiritual message (than I normally post) that has to do with helping others reach their potential.

Recently, our neighbor’s 8-year-old autistic child (who has the mental capacity of a 3 year old) ran away from home. He had been gone over 7 hours until he was found, lying in a construction area miles away from his house, under a conveyer belt. The Amber Alert had set off a neighborhood search, and we were blessed to have him found.

Fast forward a couple weeks, and one of my sons was having a bad day and a bit frustrated with us. We thought he went outside to play, but after some time we checked on him, and could not find him—outside, with neighbors, with a friend, anywhere. We literally panicked, and started canvassing the neighborhood all over again. After about 90 minutes of talking and walking and driving everywhere, I literally saw him in mind’s eye, asleep under our trampoline. It was such a spiritually strong prompting that I wasn’t surprised when I found him there, sleeping, even though both my wife and I had looked there about an hour before. I woke him up. He had no idea how long he had been gone.

The whole experience really made me wonder about a lot of things. But here are a few, as they relate to finding and building our potential.

  1. I believe in God, who sees all of His children and knows of who they are and their needs
  2. There are so many people in this world who are lost and need someone who knows them, who they are, where they are, and what they need
  3. Details are important. In the terrifying moments thinking our son was gone, my wife and I asked each other what he was wearing. I had no idea. It could have been so important. But I also thought about the details of other people’s lives, and how important they are in helping others. Ninety nine times out of 100 our inspiration for how to help others will arrive in the form of information, and not from spiritual manifestations.  If we don’t have the details about people, we won’t be able to help them.

Anyway, I know this is a little different from what I normally post, so let me know what you think. Have you had experiences like this, and how did it help you understand/increase your potential?
